We’re going to finish off our wolves, and start on a black swan and her cygnets today!
How are you going? Are you having un? What thoughts and feelings are coming up? They are all normal, I promise! Making art can feel vulnerable and stretchy, but it is oh so good too :)
Your sketchbook is more than a personal journal - it's part of an ancient tradition of humans observing and honouring the natural world through art. Today, we acknowledge this sacred lineage, from cave paintings to field journals to your own precious pages.
🌿 Today's Reflection: Every time we open our sketchbooks to study a wild being, we join countless artists who came before us - naturalists in the field, scientists making discoveries, artists capturing wonder, and indigenous peoples recording deep ecological knowledge. This practice of paying attention, of documenting life with reverence, connects us across time and culture.
Our teachers aren't just human. The very beings we sketch have been creating their own art for millennia - the intricate architecture of nests, the delicate patterns of spider webs, the graceful dance of courtship displays. When we sketch, we become students of both human and more-than-human wisdom.
I call this apprenticing to the wild.
🖋️ Gentle Invitation: As you approach your sketchbook today:
Hold it with reverence, acknowledging its role as a bridge between you and all who have documented nature's wonder
Look through your previous sketches, seeing how your observation skills have grown
Choose a subject that has been drawn by others throughout history
Notice what you see that might be uniquely yours to capture
Remember: Your sketchbook is both a personal sanctuary and part of humanity's ongoing dialogue with the natural world.
